  7.     It's happened to lawyers, doctors and other licensed
  8. professionals, but it had never happened to an opera star until
  9. last week. That's when a New York State appeals court ruled that
  10. world-class mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade must share with
  11. her ex-husband Peter Elkus any career income earned during their
  12. 17-year marriage. The ruling defined Von Stade's career and
  13. celebrity status as "marital property," entitling Elkus, the
  14. singer's voice coach and adviser during her rise to stardom, to
  15. a chunk of Von Stade's earnings.
